Cortes Island is the northernmost of the southern Gulf Islands. From Campbell River on Vancouver Island you take a ferry to Quadra Island (15 min) then drive across Quadra to Heriot Bay (15 min) and take the ferry to Cortes Island (45 min). Cortes is best described as remote and rural and its residents are very community-oriented. Today the island is an intriguing mix of old and new. Along with the early settlers and their descendants there are more recent 'settlers', people of all ages and backgrounds who have come here in search of a more independent and casual lifestyle free from many of the troubling complexities of modern existence.
